Vilfo VPN Router is a new and innovative VPN router that claims to be faster, more secure, and easier to use than traditional routers. Is this router worth the money? We take a look in this review!

The “vilfo router amazon” is a VPN router that offers excellent performance and is worth the money. It has a good range of features, and it can be used for multiple devices at once.

A strong VPN router that calls itself “the finest VPN router” is called Vilfo. Through a single access point, the gadget gives consumers a simple method to secure all of their connected devices.

While many routers may provide VPN-protected Connections, the Vilfo VPN router takes a step further by providing VPN protection from many providers at once and utilizing technology that is far more powerful than most conventional routers.

In this review, I’ll examine the Vilfo VPN router in more detail. I’ll go over how it functions, the benefits it provides, the cons it has to offer, and whether or not most people would think the $379 price tag on the router is reasonable.

Just a handful of the subjects I’ll be focusing on in my review are as follows:

  • What gives the Vilfo its advantage over standard WiFi routers?
  • Why is it so outrageously costly in comparison to comparable routers?
  • How simple is it to configure a VPN service for the Vilfo?
  • Can you simultaneously use several Providers of VPN?
  • Do all of the devices you have linked need to be using a VPN?
  • How does it function?
  • Which VPN services does Vilfo support?

My Opinion

For internet users searching for a strong, but adaptable method to provide VPN security for their whole home or small business network, the Vilfo VPN router is a great choice. The router offers a versatile technique of providing VPN security by fusing strong hardware with simple software.

The Vilfo VPN router, while relatively pricey, is undoubtedly one of the most potent VPN-optimized routers on the market right now, and I wholeheartedly suggest it to anybody searching for all-encompassing, simple-to-use VPN security for their home and small office networks.

Visit the Vilfo website to learn more or to get a VPN router from Vilfo.

Pros:

  • Strong hardware
  • a user-friendly management interface
  • parental restrictions
  • Strong and effective encryption
  • compatible with most widely used VPN services
  • a split tunneling option
  • may provide Connections from many Providers of VPN at once

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Performance of wireless routers should be improved.
  • no 24-hour client service
  • neither a handbook within the package nor online

Features

The Vilfo VPN router boasts much more Strong hardware than most routers, even the high-end routers sold for gaming or streaming services. Let’s compare the Vilfo’s hardware specs with another popular router, the Netgear Nighthawk R7000.

1656694690_407_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

Vilfo VPN Hardware Specifications

  • 1.40GHz Intel Celeron 2955U processor
  • DDR3 1600 MHz RAM in 2 GB
  • 16 GB SSD
  • : MT7612E WiFi
  • WAN: 1×1000 Mbit/s
  • 3 1000 Mbit/s LAN ports
  • One HDMI port
  • (Max 867 Mbit/s) 802.11ac
  • eight dBi antennas (2T2R)
  • WiFi at 2.4GHz or 5GHz

Hardware Specifications for Netgear Nighthawk R7000:

  • Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 CPU, Broadcom BCM4709A0
  • 256MB RAM and 128MB flash
  • concurrent dual band WiFi
  • 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n
  • 5GHz 802.11 a/n/ac
  • Five 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet ports (1 WAN & 4 LAN)
  • Two (2) USB ports—1 USB 3.0 & 1 USB 2.0 port

As you can see from the comparison chart above, the Vilfo has a far more powerful CPU than the R7000, as well as much more RAM and flash storage. The result is a router that performs better overall. Although many routers may be used with various VPN services, they are not built to exclusively utilize a VPN.

This implies that the Vilfo router should perform far better than a “regular” router, particularly when it comes to carrying out the computations necessary for the high-grade encryption employed with the OpenVPN protocol.

I am used to using a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router and am thus comfortable with its functionality. The R7000 router’s Performance as a full-time VPN router is something I am also aware with since for a while I had the ExpressVPN firmware put on it.

In most areas, the Vilfo performs better than the R7000, with the exception of wireless Connection speed. The Vilfo user interface responds quickly. On the Vifo router, configuration updates that could take a while to complete on some routers complete in a matter of seconds.

The Vilfo router has one weakness, which is in its wireless Performance, while being superior to other routers in terms of Performance for things like overall internet Relationship Speeds and router management.

Even the company website makes reference to this, advising customers to “get the best of both worlds” by switching their old router into access point mode and connecting it to a LAN port on the Vilfo in order to connect to the network protected by the Vilfo. This is suggested if customers prefer the wireless coverage their old router provides.

Router Setup

What is inside the box?

There aren’t many items inside the Vilfo VPN router box when you open it.

1656694691_988_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

  • The Vilfo router, of course.
  • the router’s two antennae
  • brief Ethernet cable
  • a wire and power source
  • A Vilfo license key is provided on the cover of a two-page “quick start guide.” (You’ll need that when configuring the router.)

The Vilfo VPN router is most appropriately characterized as simple.

The compact white gadget has two USB 3.0 Connections, an HDMI connector, and an on/off button on the front.

Three 1000 Mbit/s LAN ports, two screw posts, a WAN port, and two supplied Ethernet cables are all located on the router’s rear. The two included antennas may be attached to the router using the screw posts.

Although I like the router’s simple look, I do wish Vilfo had put the power indication light and the Connection indicator light on the front of the device rather than the rear.

Setting up the Router

Setting up the Router to your current network is easy-peasy.

1. Simply connect your modem or switch with the included Ethernet wire.

2. Next, join the cable’s other end to the Vilfo’s WAN port.

3. Attach the router’s power supply, then connect it into an accessible AC outlet.

4. Depress the router’s power button on the front.

5. It takes the Vilfo around three minutes to start up. Connect your computer to the network once the three minutes have passed, either through Ethernet or the router’s wireless signal, which is by default referred to as “VILFO.” If the router needs to be updated, you may need to reconnect if you connect using WiFi.

6. Once you’ve established a Connection, use your preferred web browser and type “admin.vilfo.com” into the URL bar. Adhere to the instructions that the web browser displays.

  1. 1656694692_770_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

Step-by-step instructions for setting up a router are provided, and everything is done on a web browser.

First, you must input the license key from the front of the fast start guide, then choose a name for the hotspot, choose whether to use 802.11ac or 802.11n (802.11ac is preferable), and complete a few additional steps.

The Manual Is Where?

A complete handbook is one item that you won’t find inside the package. The two-page quick start guide is the only thing you receive.

Although the instructions in the book are sufficient to get you going, you will undoubtedly have some queries about how the router works or has to be configured further.

While it has become customary to not provide a complete handbook with any kind of computer equipment (or, really, any electronic equipment), many manufacturers will give a link in their fast start manuals to a full manual in PDF format.

Unfortunately, Vilfo doesn’t do this. Instead, the business provides the majority of the user’s inquiries with answers under a “FAQ” section on their website.

Although many people probably won’t find this to be a significant concern, I’ve always loved having a paper manual or at the very least a PDF that I can refer to. (These are particularly helpful if you’re trying to diagnose a problematic Connection that can prevent you from accessing the Vilfo website.)

Linking up with a VPN

How to establish a Connection with your VPN provider is among the topics that are not covered in the router’s fast start manual.

The Administration interface will fortunately guide you through it, making it a rather simple procedure. (Usually.)

Selecting a VPN service is a part of the initial setup procedure. (You may easily alter this or subsequently add more VPN service providers.)

25 VPN services are supported by the router, including:

The router may also utilize OpenVPN configuration files if your VPN service isn’t listed. This indicates that you may probably utilize the router with your provider if it has OpenVPN as one of its protocols. (The router only supports OpenVPN as a protocol.)

I utilized a set of user credentials for OVPN (which the provider, who also produces the Vilfo, graciously supplied me), as well as my ExpressVPN credentials, for the purpose of my testing. Later, I added Connections for IPVanish and Private Internet Access.

1656694693_953_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

While most VPN companies’ setup procedures are straightforward, there is a snag to get around if you’re setting up an ExpressVPN Connection.

I attempted to connect into my ExpressVPN account with the usual username and password, but the Vilfo kept stating that the login had failed.

When I asked Vilfo for assistance, they were nice enough to provide me a link to ExpressVPN’s troubleshooting guidelines. You’ll need to copy and paste some data from the ExpressVPN website, so make sure you’re signed in. Customer service for Vilfo will be covered later.

1656694694_138_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

Most of the time, all you’ll need to connect is the login information provided by your VPN service. My login and password were all that OPVN needed to connect me.

The interface for Vilfo administration

An intuitive web-based administrative interface is provided by the Vilfo VPN router. The majority of the choices are simple to grasp and utilize, and each menu is clearly organized.

Dashboard

When you enter into the management interface of your Vilfo VPN router, the Dashboard panel is the first one you’ll encounter.

1656694695_703_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

This page offers an easy-to-read overview of data, including gateway latency, the load on your router at the moment, the number of devices connected to it, their makers, the bandwidth each device has used, and the proportion of encrypted vs. unencrypted traffic.

Devices

Vilfo users could spend the most of their time on this page since it’s where VPN groups are created, viewed, and edited.

This means that while your computer and mobile devices could all be connected to one provider, or even the same provider but to a different server location, your streaming devices, such as a smart TV, Apple TV, Roku, or other devices, could be connected to a fast VPN provider that offers reliable access to streaming content (like ExpressVPN).

1656694696_806_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

Each connected device may be assigned to a specific group, which users can organize in almost any way they choose.

In order to categorize devices by VPN provider or by usage, users may establish new VPN groups on the “Devices” panel. Any VPN service that has been configured on the router may be selected by groups to utilize. This is a really helpful feature since groups may change their server and provider on the go.

By clicking a device name, users can access a screen where they can view numerous bits of information about the device’s usage of the VPN router, change the group the device belongs to, delete the device, view and edit parental restrictions, add and edit bypass rules (by entering an IP address, domain or port), forward ports and more.

Browser Add-On

Here, you can install the Vilfo Browser Add-On, which you can set up on a site-by-site basis to either bypass VPN protection or to force VPN protection.

1656694697_348_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

While requiring VPN protection prevents you from ever visiting a certain website without being connected to the secure VPN tunnel, bypassing permits access to websites that do not accept VPN-protected data.

Forwards to Port

For each device, you may establish and control port forwarding here. The “Devices” panel also provides access to this one.

While currently there are 25 providers that you can use natively with the router, Providers of VPN that use OpenVPN can also be manually set up to work with the Vilfo.

a VPN server

This is where you control the Opena VPN server built into the Vilfo router.

Unlike a VPN provider’s VPN protections, which provides an encrypted Connection to the internet, the Vilfo router’s Opena VPN server allows you to securely connect to your home network from outside of the network.

Email or the Pushover notifications service are two methods for sending alerts. When a new router update is released, a new device is added, a group joins to or disconnects from a VPN service, the system goes down, and many more events may trigger notifications to be delivered.

OpenVPN

You may change a number of OpenVPN settings in this area, such as whether the Connection kill switch is enabled or disabled, the Connection timeout value, and the protocol choice (UDP/TCP).

Security & Privacy

Keeping your online activity hidden from curious parties like your Internet Service Provider, hackers, and the government is one of the most crucial applications for a VPN.

There is just one Connection protocol that the Vilfo VPN router supports, but it is OpenVPN.

OpenVPN has a good track record of providing reliable and well-performing Connections. While many Providers of VPN also offer other Connection protocols, OpenVPN is my Connection protocol of choice.

Users may choose between AES-128 and AES-256 encryption, with the latter being the more secure option.

The Vilfo VPN router offers kill switch protection and the capability to alert you if something goes wrong, such as when a device group is disconnected from the VPN or when a VPN user is disconnected, in addition to the military-grade encryption that your VPN services provide. These features help protect your Connection from being exposed to prying eyes.

Customer Service

I only had a few questions for Vilfo Customer Service while testing the router, and in both cases, I received excellent support.

Within an hour, I received a response to a query I had on using the router to connect to ExpressVPN. Early the following morning, a query about the ports on the router’s front was addressed.

Live support chat is one of the accessible assistance choices, albeit the two times I used it, “live” chat wasn’t available; instead, I interacted with a machine that sent my message to a person. A searchable help database and email support are furthermore offered.

All support responses were helpful and kind. The assistance database was very useful to me; usually often, I was able to discover what I needed there.

Performance

Interface Effectiveness

The management interface of the Vilfo VPN router is intuitive and well-designed. On a router with VPN support, it is without a doubt one of the nicest user interfaces I have ever seen.

The user interface is quick and straightforward while also being appealing. A speedy and responsive interface is provided by the router’s Intel Celeron CPU, 2GB of RAM, and big (16GB for a router) SSD storage. Many routers, particularly ones that are a few years old or older, operate similarly to a Windows XP-running 486SX laptop. (Do a search, kids.)

While many users may simply set-and-forget their Vilfo VPN router, there are those who like to fool around in the settings, or those like me, who are constantly trying new Providers of VPN. Those users will appreciate the peppy Performance that the Vilfo VPN router offers.

Relationship Speeds

Although Vilfo admits that their router’s WiFi speeds aren’t exactly on par with those of other routers, I thought those speeds were more than enough.

I should mention that my office, where I work, is where my WiFi routers are. However, in my tests, the WiFi hotspot included within the Vilfo VPN router worked wonderfully.

1656694709_472_Vilfo-VPN-Router-Review-Is-This-VPN-Router-Worth

You can view my findings in the table below.

I tested the download and Transmit Speeds while connected without a VPN over Ethernet and then via WiFi on my M1 Mac mini using the Speedtest software.

I then performed the same download and upload tests on Ethernet and WiFi using the ExpressVPN software on my Mac.

The third time I used the Vilfo VPN Router with the ExpressVPN Connection enabled, I performed the download and upload tests.

In order to provide a comparison, I also performed the same tests while connected to a conventional router, the Netgear Nighthawk R7000, both with and without the ExpressVPN app.

Connection Obtaining Speed  Transmit Speed
Vilfo WiFi without VPN 229 Mbps 138 Mbps
Vilfo Ethernet without VPN 451 Mbps 350 Mbps
WiFi with ExpressVPN on a Vilfo Router 145 Mbps 38.3 Mbps
Ethernet with ExpressVPN and Vilfo Router 201 Mbps 70.7 Mbps
Vilfo WiFi and the Express VPN app 116 Mbps 73.6 Mbps
Vilfo Ethernet and Express VPN App 149 Mbps 101 Mbps
WiFi Netgear Nighthawk R7000 with no VPN 232 Mbps 93 Mbps
Ethernet Netgear Nighthawk R7000 without VPN 405 Mbps 224 Mbps
ExpressVPN App and WiFi from Netgear Nighthawk R7000 115 Mbps 35.7 Mbps
ExpressVPN App with Ethernet over Netgear Nighthawk R7000 237 Mbps 96.4 Mbps

The Vilfo VPN router functioned well, as seen in the table above, both when it was connected to ExpressVPN and when it was utilizing a regular ISP connection. On WiFi, Ethernet, and both with and without ExpressVPN, the Vilfo outperformed the Netgear Nighthawk R7000.

While the Relationship Speeds were all impressive, the best Performance was seen from using the ExpressVPN Connection that the Vilfo router offered. Also, you can see that an Ethernet Connection outperforms a WiFi Connection. An Ethernet Connection will offer the best Relationship Speeds, and should be used whenever possible, IMHO.

The router’s ExpressVPN performance was equivalent to that of my M1 Mac mini when I used the ExpressVPN app.

It should be noted that depending on the device you’re using, the brand and type of the router you now use, the location of your router in your house or office, the size of your home or office, and several other minor variations, your figures may differ from my findings.

Your outcomes will also differ depending on the VPN service you employ.

I tried ExpressVPN, OVPN, IPVanish, Private Internet Access and other providers during my testing, and all performed quite well. For example, ExpressVPN delivered the fastest Obtaining Speeds in my most recent general speed tests. The VPN service did not disappoint when using the Vilfo, providing above-average Obtaining Speeds.

Overall, I was happy with how well the Ethernet and WiFi connections that Vilfo offered performed. In both situations, I was able to stream HD video without any lagging or buffering, and my regular internet activities (including writing this review) all went well outside of testing.

Conclusion

Even though it was undoubtedly pricey, the Vilfo VPN router turned out to be a good solution for protecting and enhancing VPN connections in homes and small offices. The router provides quick, secure access to several well-known VPN providers. The router offers a simple method for managing and protecting connections for all of your connected devices.

The ability to utilize several VPN connections, which enables users to choose the optimal security and performance choices for various device kinds, is a feature I really enjoy.

When compared to the UIs of other routers, the router’s administration interface is simple to use and provides superior performance. When I initially read the router’s characteristics, I thought they were excessive, but now I value the device’s capabilities.

4.5 out of 5 stars
